THE EARTH’S HER STAGE: Pooja Chitgopekar. (TOI Photo)Did you know that Robert Frost helped Pantaloons Femina Miss India-Earth 2007 Pooja Chitgopekar clinch the coveted title of Miss Earth-Air 2007 at the Miss Earth pageant in Manila, Philippines ,on Sunday?
Yes, it was her answer that was peppered with lines from Frost’s poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, that helped the 22-year-old MBBS student join the ranks of Indian beauties like Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Diana Hayden, Yukta Mookhey, Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra, Dia Mirza and more recently Amruta Patki (who incidentally won the same title last year) as India’s newest ambassador of beauty teamed with brains.

“It feels great to be a part of such illustrious company!” says an excited Pooja who is still recovering from the after-effects of victory in Manila. “And the fact that the pageant has a strong socio-environmental message to give makes my victory doubly jubilant. I was asked how I would describe our lovely Earth to a blind child and I said I would use emotions to describe colours, like using love to describe the warming colour of the orange setting sun!”
Interestingly, even Pooja’s shaded brown evening gown which was designed by Hemant Trivedi, reflected the environment with its uprooted tree theme. “I want to thank everybody who has been behind me in my endeavour to win the title,” says Pooja.
“I can’t believe that out of 88 girls, who were then brought down to 16 and then to eight and then to the final four, I was constantly there. It means a lot to me to bring this title back home.”
And back home is one place Pooja can’t wait to come back to. “After I finish all my press meets and other commitments here, I will be coming back to India and I’m truly looking forward to that,” says Pooja, who has spent her growing up years in New Zealand, but calls India home. “I want to try my hand at acting in Bollywood and hope things work out for me.”
With the way Pooja’s luck is going, we don’t doubt that for a minute!
